Remarks: Promerycochoerus, meaning, before ruminating hog, is an extinct genus of oreodont artiodactyl that resembled a hippopotamus. Promerycochoerus lived in central plains of North America during the lower Miocene. It was a large mammal more than a meter long that is thought to have been amphibious, due to its elongated, barrel-shaped body with short limbs that are typical selection adaptations of semi-aquatic mammals. This fine skull measuring more than 10 inches long attests to the size of the Promerycochoerus.
