Rare Collector Grade Hiodon Green River Fossil Fish

Hiodon falcatus (Mooneye)

Age: Eocene
Size: The fish is 5 1/4” in length on a 6 1/2” x 4 1/4” plate
Fossil Location: Green River Formation, Kemmerer, Wyoming
Comments: The Hiodon is one of the few Green River fossil fishes with a living relative, the Mooneye. Hiodon fed mostly on insects and lived primarily in the streams that fed into Fossil Lake. Thus, they are quite rare in the fossil record and quite desirable by advanced collectors. This one is a split fish that has unusually good natural color, as well as excellent preservation of the bony parts and small very sharp teeth.
